Q735: Is there a minimum age for piercing?

Answer

There is no minimum age for most body piercings but performing genital or nipple piercing on someone under the age of 16 could be considered an offence.

In order to be able to carry out the piercing procedure a licence is required. Many local authorities set an age limit of 16 years old as a condition of the licence.

Most local councils keep registers of approved piercers who have passed hygiene and safety standards and who are regularly inspected by health and safety officers. A copy of this licence must be displayed in a prominent place on the premises.

Answer

The Policing Pledge is an agreement between the police and the public and is part of a programme of radical reform to change the relationship between the public, police and Government.

It contains clear commitments for all forces and outlines the way any issues should be dealt with. It informs the public of its aim to provide each person access to the same level of support and service when it comes to policing. In turn it gives communities a stronger voice in setting local police priorities. It is a national standard that people can expect from their neighbourhood policing team.

Each police force will produce their own version of the pledge, go to your local police force's website to see their version.

Answer

It is an offence to sell cigarettes, tobacco and cigarette papers to a person under the age of 18 years old. There are also further penalties for those who persistently sell cigarettes to persons under the age of 18. The magistrates can prohibit them from selling cigarettes from certain premises for up to one year.

There is no law relating to a minimum age that prevents a person who works in shop from selling cigarettes.

In addition to the above, the police and park keepers in uniform have the power to seize and dispose of tobacco products from a person under 16 years who is smoking in any street or public place.

If you are aware of a shop selling cigarettes, alcohol or age restricted products to underage persons, you can report this to your local police force  or Trading Standards Office.

There are rules relating to selling cigarettes and tobacco products in the UK. If you are a seller or distributer of these products you must follow these rules. Please see website in Related Information for further details.
